On my way to class I was stressed. My partner and I had been out running errands and I was afraid we’d show up to class too late, walking in just as everyone was mid pose and staring at us. Fortunately, for us (and everyone in the class really) the first 15 minutes of Vinyasa and Chill are set aside for relaxing, catching up, and smoking (if you feel so inclined.)
Once we arrived class began. We spread out, found room for our mats, and started the class with a meditation. Katrina’s voice was calming and serene. Her affirmations helped me begin to drown out all my outside stress. Work. Bills, Traffic. I really need to go through my closet. Shit, I need to call my mom this week. I have deadlines for like, three things I’m working on. All my running chaos had to melt away. There was no space for it once class began.
As we moved through poses quickly I was able to challenge myself and focus on balancing and holding the poses. I kept glancing at my partner who had never practiced yoga. Even he was able to go along with the rest of the class, despite being unfamiliar with all the poses. The vibe of the class was chill and soothing. The lighting was dim, music was calming, and everyone seemed to be moving at their own pace. I didn’t feel any pressure to move faster or push myself further than I was comfortable doing.
Unlike more competitive yoga studios in town, everyone came to class as they were and got to work. It wasn’t a contest. It was a chance to spend an hour and a half with friends in an inclusive space and relax. With Katrina’s instruction, I was able to stretch through my stress and focus on myself. After an hour and a half a few short water breaks, class was done. My body felt perfectly stretched and my mind felt at ease.
Making time for yourself is hard. Making time to work out after a busy day is even harder. Luckily, Vinyasa and Chill doesn’t feel like a chore. It feels like a mental health break and mind decompression. After class, my outside stress didn’t immediately stream back into my mind. I was able to face the week with ease and move forward, blissed out. There are 168 hours in a week. Why shouldn’t 1.5 of them be spent working out while you chill out?
"Vinyasa & Chill incorporates a few of my favorite things: meeting new people, the physical asana practice of yoga and medicinal cannabis. When I first started practicing yoga; I would have laughed in your face if you would have told me I would become a yoga teacher. From being at rock bottom to teaching yoga 5x a week, Vinyasa & Chill is an incredible experience not only for me, but for everyone I share the idea and moment with."
Vinyasa & Chill is every Tuesday night at 7:30pm in our gallery, we'd love to see you there.
About the class:
We've hosted Vinyasa and Chill since last March, when yoga teacher Katrina approached us about putting together a cannabis-friendly class. Katrina wanted to create a class where students could decompress from their week, smoke (if they’d like), and then flow through her class.
Class is only $10, which is about half the price of most local yoga classes! It's BYOW but if you don’t have your own yoga mat or blocks, no need to stress. Mats and blocks are provided for those who don’t have their own (but get there quickly, because supplies are limited.) Vinyasa & Chill is the perfect way to decompress from your day and prepare for the rest of your week. It’s the perfect Tuesday night treat yourself.
